    Open Matte just means that it isn’t cropped into the original aspect ratio. That might mean you see some more detail, or it might mean you see boom mics.

    Open matte typically means a 16:9 picture that is usually cropped from it’s original 21:9 aspect ratio source to fill the whole screen of your TV. A 21:9 widescreen picture doesn’t fill the whole screen, the picture will have black bars at both the top and the bottom of your TV screen. Depending on the scan used by the studios, they’ll either zoom in on the center of a 21:9 picture to eliminate the black bars making it 16:9 to fill your TV screen of which you will not see any of the details outside or either side of this… Read more »
